Sophos: Our antivirus software recommendation

Antivirus software is designed to scan your computer for intrusions, viruses and different types of malware. It helps to prevent these programs from being downloaded and executed on your computer. Antivirus software can carry out functions to quarantine and fix infections or at least delete the infectious files. Computer viruses can be a dangerous threat to your computer and privat data and therefore Projekt Neptun strongly recommends to install antivirus software not only on Windows systems, but also Macs. Naturally, this should be done before any malware has infected the computer since the damage done often cannot be reversed!

For all owners of a Neptun-laptop we’re offering the commercial version of ‘Sophos Endpoint Antivirus’ free of charge. The software can be downloaded from the ‘Neptun Software Service’.

For downloading you either need a Switch AAI-Login as a student. In case you ordered a Lenovo or HP device from Neptun, you get a Neptun access code via Mail from our distribution partner. Microsoft and Apple customers have to send us their bill in order to get the access code.

Sophos blocks all malware and infections that are stored in its database at the time of the attack. Additionally, Sophos can also detect and block previously unknown threats by analyzing computer processes on their behavior and usage of certain techniques that are commonly used by malicious exploits. This enables the software to protect even against some unknown vulnerabilities, without a big impact on the performance of the host system. By correlating information on current threats, Sophos can also identify dangerous URLs or potentially unwanted software and proactively secure the system against them. The installation of Sophos is quite simple as you can see in the installation guides for Windows and for Mac OS X.

Since the database of Sophos is updated several times a day, it is advisable to provide regular internet access to the software so it can detect the most recent threats.
