When your new MacBook arrives, it's basically ready to go. However, there are a few things you should consider before you start using your new device. We have summarized a series of useful steps for you. These will help you get your device up and running.

Unpack your laptop and check for dead-on-arrival

Check your new laptop for delivery damage, defects and function immediately after delivery. If you find a defect, report it immediately to our sales partner DQ Solutions. You can find information about the procedure on our manufacturer support page.

If you have any questions about the process, we will be happy to assist you. If you have to wait a long time for your new device, we will provide you with a loan device.

Set up your user

When you start your new MacBook for the first time, you have to select your desired language and region. Mac OS X will then ask you if you want to restore a Time Machine-Backup or create a new user.

Time Machine-Backup: You can restore a complete backup of an old MacBook or Mac (existing user accounts, your personal files, installed applications and settings) to set up your new MacBook.

New User: If you choose the option "Do not transfer my data now", you can then add a new user.

Once you have created your user or restored your Time Machine-Backup, the setup of your MacBook is complete.

Keeping your MacBook up to date

To provide your MacBook with important software updates, click on the Settings icon in the Dock (menu bar at the bottom of the screen). Navigate to "Software Updates" in System Preferences. Mac OS X will now search and list all available updates for OS X. To install updates automatically, simply check the box "Keep my Mac up to date automatically".

You can update apps downloaded from the App Store by going to the Updates section in the App Store.

Installing useful software

Microsoft Office 365 is provided free of charge by most higher education institutions. You can find information about this on our institutional software website or from your institution's IT services.

Adobe Creative Cloud for students can be found on our software page.

Browser: Many browsers offer you numerous options for personalization, as well as handy extensions like ad blockers. We recommend all users to install an ad blocker. This useful tool removes unwanted ads from websites, can save time on slow connections, and is easy on the nerves.
We recommend uBlock Origin, which is available for free for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Opera. For Safai, we recommend the AdGuard extension, which is also free.

You can find more free software alternatives recommended by us on our free software website.
